MLB Punt Plays: Friday, Sept. 7

Welcome to my daily MLB article for FantasyDraft’s LockerRoom! Here you will find a breakdown for my favorite low budget MLB players for the day’s (or night’s) main slate. Each article will focus on my favorite low salary starting pitcher and my three favorite low salary batters. Although the title of the article is MLB Punt Plays, like the PGA Punt Plays written by another analyst of our DFS Karma team, they aren’t your traditional “punts.” I truly feel that each player I include in this article moving forward has a very solid chance to score you some points. To ensure my players are always light on salary, my pitcher will have a cap of $13,000 and each batter will be capped at $7,000 in salary.

P: Chris Bassitt – $9,300

Bassitt has thrown well through only seven starts this season. In those games, he owns a 2-3 record with a 3.19 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. He has also held his opponents to a 0.7 HR/9, while posting a 6.9 K/9 through 36.2 innings. Bassitt has looked outstanding against left-handed batters this season, holding them to a .230 average with a .246 slugging percentage and a .264 wOBA. He has also thrown well at home, where he has held his opponents to a .266/.344/.306 line this season. Bassitt gets a solid matchup against the Texas Rangers, who have struggled away from home this season. The A’s are -167 favorites in a game set at 9 runs, giving the Rangers an implied run total of only 3.9 runs tonight. Bassitt isn’t safe enough for cash games, but he can be considered in tournaments tonight.

IF: Tyler Flowers – $6,700

Flowers has looked decent over his last 10 games, posting a .267 average with a .400 slugging percentage and a .753 OPS over that span. He also owns a 57% hard-hit rate and a 94 mph exit velocity over the last 15 days. Flowers has dominated left-handed pitching, as well, recording 0.302 wOBA and 0.192 ISO differentials against lefties. He gets a good matchup against Patrick Corbin, who has allowed right-handed batters to hit for a .261 average with a .427 slugging percentage and a .320 wOBA in his career. Flowers is expected to hit fifth in the Atlanta Braves tonight. That’s rare for a salary relief catcher, and he continues to make a relatively safe option that also comes with quite a bit of upside. He’s a solid option in all leagues for a low price tag on this slate.

OF: Billy McKinney – $6,800

Through 18 games this season, McKinney is hitting .351 with a .649 slugging percentage and a 1.082 OPS. He also owns nine extra-base hits (four home runs) and 11 RBIs in those games. McKinney owns 41% hard-hit and 32% fly ball rates with a 95 mph exit velocity over the last 15 days, as well. He gets a great matchup against Carlos Carrasco tonight, and McKinney owns a .347 average with a .612 slugging percentage and a .265 ISO against right-handed pitching this season. He’s leading off for the Toronto Blue Jays, adding to his upside, as well. With potential extra at-bats in this game, McKinney makes a safe option that comes with plenty of upside. He can be used in all leagues.

UTIL: Jakob Bauers – $6,400

Bauers’ price tag dropped quite a bit after struggling over his last 10 games. In those games, he’s hitting only .034 with little power. His peripherals over the last 15 days are significantly better, though, as he owns a 57% hard-hit rate with a 94 mph exit velocity over that span. He has hit right-handed pitching well, posting 0.026 wOBA and 0.029 ISO differentials against righties. He gets a great matchup against Dylan Bundy, who is allowing left-handed batters to hit for a .317 average with a .555 slugging percentage and a .396 wOBA. He’s hitting late in the Tampa Bay Rays lineup but still comes with enough upside to be used in tournaments.
