MLB Punt Plays: Friday July 20

Welcome to my daily MLB article for FantasyDraft’s LockerRoom! Here you will find a breakdown for my favorite low budget MLB players for the day’s (or night’s) main slate. Each article will focus on my favorite low salary starting pitcher and my three favorite low salary batters. Although the title of the article is MLB Punt Plays, like the PGA Punt Plays written by another analyst of our DFS Karma team, they aren’t your traditional “punts.” I truly feel that each player I include in this article moving forward has a very solid chance to score you some points. To ensure my players are always light on salary, my pitcher will have a cap of $13,000 and each batter will be capped at $7,000 in salary.

P: Wade LeBlanc – $11,800

LeBlanc has been enjoying a solid season, posting a 5-1 record with a 3.63 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP through 19 games (14 starts). He has also been a better option in Seattle, where he owns a 5-0 record with a 2.88 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP. LeBlanc has also recorded a 1.6 HR/9 with a 7.2 K/9 at home this season. Surprisingly, he has been a significantly better option against right-handed batting. He’s holding righties to a .234 average with a .392 slugging percentage and a .287 wOBA. He has also held his opponents to a .201/.390/.273 line at home this season. LeBlanc gets a great matchup against the Chicago White Sox, who rank fourth on the slate in strikeouts per at-bat and team wOBA this season. He’s a -190 favorite in a game set at 8.5 runs. The White own a low implied run total of 3.6 runs tonight.

IF: Lucas Duda – $6,800

Duda was struggling a bit over his last 10 games before the All-Star Break, recording a .158 average with a .289 slugging percentage and a .545 OPS. While his numbers aren’t elite, he has been a relatively consistent option that also possesses solid upside. He has also been a dominant option against right-handed pitching, posting 0.07 wOBA and 0.1 ISO differentials against righties. He gets a matchup against Kyle Gibson, who has struggled at times against left-handed batters this season. Overall, he’s allowing lefties to hit for a .237 average with a .337 slugging percentage and a .291 wOBA. Duda is also expected to hit fifth in the Royals line tonight. He makes a solid option for a low price tag, and he can be considered in all leagues tonight.

OF: Chris Davis – $5,900

Davis has struggled all season, but he did post a .200 average with a .400 slugging percentage and a .682 OPS over his last 10 games before the All Star Break. He’s a powerful player, who owns 0.058 wOBA and 0.033 ISO differentials against right-handed pitching. He gets a solid matchup against Sam Gaviglio, as well. Gaviglio has allowed left-handed batters to hit for a .255 average with a .410 slugging percentage and a .310 wOBA this season. He’s also expected to hit fifth in the Baltimore lineup. Davis could struggle to see RBI situations because of the offense he plays in, but he’s a high upside option that comes with an extremely low price tag.

UTIL: JaCoby Jones – $6,700

Jones has not been a consistent option this season, but he boasts a great combination of speed and power. Through 88 games, he owns a .214 average with a .373 slugging percentage and a .642 OPS. He also possesses a 46.0% extra-base hit rate with eight steals this season. Furthermore, he has been a more consistent and a more powerful option at home. Jones also features 0.011 wOBA and 0.017 ISO differentials against left-handed pitching. He also gets a good matchup against David Price, who is allowing righties to hit for a .248 average with a .446 slugging percentage and a .324 wOBA. Jones is only expected to hit ninth in the Tigers lineup, but he’s a consistent fantasy player that also comes with quite a bit of upside. He’s a solid option in all leagues.
