MLB Punt Plays: July 10th

P: Julio Teheran ($14,800)- There’s not a ton of cheap options at pitcher tonight, which has me focused on Julio Teheran in tournaments. Teheran has been dialed in over the last month posting a huge 34% strikeout rate over his last 30 days. It’s the same story with Teheran however, as he is really good against righties and he gets beat by lefties. The Blue Jays will lose one left-handed bat traveling into an NL park, and if they roll out six or more righties it’s a huge boost for Teheran. He also has gone back to his slider recently, he has thrown it 19.5% of the time this season but over the last 30 days that usage jumps to almost 23%. The Blue Jays are a bottom-ten team in the MLB against sliders, and that just makes the matchup even better. If we get a righty-heavy lineup Teheran will jump to the top of my tournament board tonight.

INF: Jose Bautista ($6,400)- Jose Bautista doesn’t have the same reputation he once did, but he has been a lot better than you think in his short time with the Mets. Joey Bats has posted a .349 wOBA against right-handed pitching this season, but the batted ball data looks good with 47.5% hard hits and 45.8% fly balls. Bautista matches up with Enyel De Los Santos who is making his major league debut for the Phillies. De Los Santos minor league numbers look good, but he lacks big strikeout upside and that’s really Bautista’s main weakness. Vegas has shown some early love to the Mets as well with their implied team total rising 0.5 runs this morning. I’m siding with the Mets this game and Bautista should be relatively low-owned.

OF: Kole Calhoun($5,700)- Kole Calhoun was irrelevant for most of the fantasy season, but he has been leading off against right-handed pitching recently and he draws one tonight in Mike Leake. Calhoun owns a 36% hard hit rate and 45% fly balls over the last 14 days, which matches up well with Leake’s 40% hard contact allowed. He still generates more ground balls than fly balls against lefties, so it’s important we use someone who can get the ball up in the air against him and Calhoun can certainly do that.

UTIL: Yonder Alonso ($7,200)- The Indians are going to be a popular team once against tonight against Sal Romano, so I love getting some cheaper exposure to them with Yonder Alonso. Romano is allowing over 40% hard contact to left-handed batters and Alonso’s hard hit rate its at 39% over the last 14 days. He homered last night, and is just a tad too cheap for the upside that he provides especially in the middle of this Indians order.
