MLB Punt Plays: Friday June 22

Welcome to my daily MLB article for FantasyDraft’s LockerRoom! Here you will find a breakdown for my favorite low budget MLB players for the day’s (or night’s) main slate. Each article will focus on my favorite low salary starting pitcher and my three favorite low salary batters. Although the title of the article is MLB Punt Plays, like the PGA Punt Plays written by another analyst of our DFS Karma team, they aren’t your traditional “punts.” I truly feel that each player I include in this article moving forward has a very solid chance to score you some points. To ensure my players are always light on salary, my pitcher will have a cap of $13,000 and each batter will be capped at $7,000 in salary.

P: Ivan Nova – $11,700

Nova has had a few ups and downs this season, but he has thrown well at home. Through five home starts, he owns a 1-3 record with a 3.48 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP. He also possesses a 0.9 HR/9 to go along with a low 4.9 K/9. While his strikeouts have not come in Pittsburgh, he has flashed significantly more strikeout potential than that, posting an 8.7 K/9 on the road. He has also looked good in each of his last two games, scoring 16.7 and 27.15 fantasy points. Nova has also dominated right-handed batters this season, holding them to a .224 average with a .417 slugging percentage and a .290 wOBA. He a good matchup against the Arizona Diamondbacks, who strikeout at a high rate and feature a below average team wOBA on this slate. Nova is a small underdog in this game, but it is set at only 8 runs. He can be considered in all leagues for his current price tag.

IF: Elias Diaz – $6,700

Diaz has caught fire recently, hitting .296 with a .556 slugging percentage and a .866 OPS over his last 10 games. He also owns a dominant 59% hard-hit rate with a 95 mph exit velocity over the last 15 days. Furthermore, Diaz is hitting .340 at home this season, although he has seen limited at-bats. He has also been a dominant option against left-handed pitching, hitting .462 with 0.123 wOBA and 0.02 ISO differentials against lefties. He’s expected to hit fifth in the Pirates lineup, which is an elite spot for a salary relief catcher. Diaz is averaging 12.2 fantasy points per game over his last five full games, as well. He makes a great option in all leagues in this matchup.

OF: Jake Marisnick – $5,500

In limited at-bats over his last 10 games, Marisnick is hitting .333 with a .600 slugging percentage and a .975 OPS. In his last three games with four at-bats, Marisnick is averaging 11.7 fantasy points per game. He has also looked solid with 38% hard-hit and 53% fly ball rates over the last 15 days. Over that same span, he owns a 95 mph exit velocity, as well. Marisnick gets a good matchup against Danny Duffy, who has struggled against right-handed batters this season. Marisnick brings 0.067 wOBA and 0.014 ISO differentials into this game, and this is a matchup he can take advantage of. He’s only expected to hit ninth in the Astros lineup, but he is still a fairly consistent option that also possesses some upside.

UTIL: Rougned Odor – $6,400

Odor has been playing well over his last 10 games, recording a .265 average with a .441 slugging percentage and an .850 OPS over that span. He has also scored fantasy points in each of those 10 games, displaying consistency to go along with his upside. He also owns 48% hard-hit and 52% fly ball rates over the last 15 days. He gets a solid matchup against Fernando Romero, and Odor boasts 0.013 wOBA and 0.025 ISO differentials against right-handed pitching. He’s expected to hit sixth in the Rangers lineup, which could give him a few RBI opportunities tonight. Odor has been playing well enough to be used in all leagues.
