MLB Punt Plays: June 13th

P: Tyler Mahle ($12,900)- If you’re looking to punt at pitcher today, I would be interested in the savings that Tyler Mahle provides. Mahle is one of the Reds top young arms, but he has had an up-and-down first go with the big league club. His overall numbers are mediocre, but it’s really been the lefties that have got him as he has allowed just a .288 wOBA against right-handed batters. He owns a 22% strikeout rate overall (23% against RHH) so the fact that the Kansas City Royals are a low strikeout team doesn’t affect him, we weren’t expecting a huge strikeout game anyways and we aren’t being asked to pay for one at this price. The Royals have a very right-handed heavy lineup with Mike Moustakas and Alex Gordon being the intimidating left-handed bats. If he can navigate those two, he profiles well against this lineup and provides extreme savings.

INF: Jedd Gyorko ($6,300)- Jedd was featured in this column yesterday and I’m going right back to the well tonight against another lefty in Eric Lauer. Lauer has the potential to be a serviceable arm in the big leagues, but he has been mediocre against right-handed bats this season posting a 4.48 xFIP and 12% walks. Gyorko has murdered southpaws this season owning a monster .440 ISO and he just appears to be way too cheap for the power upside he provides.

OF: Rhys Hoskins ($7,200)- Hoskins is one of my favorite plays on the entire slate and I will 100% be locking him in at this price. Hoskins is much cheaper than he was at the start of the year, but there is reason for optimism tonight. Despite the lackluster numbers against lefties this season, what sticks out me is a monster 65% fly ball rate. He’s still getting the ball up in the air, and Tyler Anderson is allowing 41% fly balls himself to right-handed hitters this season. I think the Hoskins break out is looming and I’m jamming him in that this price tonight.

UTIL: Yadi Molina ($6,800)- I’m going to look at Gyorko’s teammate Yadi Molina as well tonight, the Cardinals should be a popular team once again with their Vegas implied team total sitting at 5 runs. Much like Hoskins, Molina’s numbers against left-handed pitchers this season are lacking…but that doesn’t tell the whole story. If you look a bit deeper, you’ll see Molina owns a huge 50% fly ball rate and 55% hard contact rate against lefties this season. Someone that is hitting the ball that hard is getting at least somewhat unlucky, and Molina is locked into the middle of the Cards order.
