MLB Punt Plays: June 11th

P: Ryan Yarbrough ($11,200)- Ryan Yarbrough is finally drawing a start for the Rays, despite him actually being their main pitcher for a few games these past weeks. He is fully stretched out nearing 100 pitches in three straight outings, and has a decent matchup at home in a pitcher-friendly park against the Blue Jays who rank bottom-ten in wRC+ against southpaws. He has been very good for the Rays this season with a 3.81 SIERA and has been fantastic at limiting hard contact (30%). He doesn’t have huge strikeout ability, but with a 22.1% strikeout rate he is capable of having a big performance once in a while as he showed earlier this season with an 8 and 9 strikeout game back-to-back. At his price, he is the best value on the slate and is a viable tournament option tonight.

INF: Matt Carpenter ($6,300)- Matt Carpenter has been a staple of my articles this entire season and he just continues to be under-priced despite his production picking up. He matches up with Jordan Lyles today who is much more beatable if you are left-handed. This season, Lyles owns a 5.01 xFIP against left-handed batters compared to a 3.44 xFIP against righties, with higher walks also coming against left-handers. Carp has posted a massive 53% fly ball rate against righties this season along with a 49% hard contact rate. This is just too cheap of a price and he should be one of the highest owned players on the slate tonight.

OF: Dexter Fowler ($6,300)- Given these cheap price tags, I’m sticking with Carpenter’s teammate Dexter Fowler in the outfield. I noted above that Lyles has been much more beatable as a left-handed batter, and Fowler has been much better from the left-side of the plate this season. He has had an up-and-down season overall, but he is showing signs of life with a 62% hard contact rate over the last 14 days…meaning he could be ready to break out offensively!

UTIL: Melky Cabrera ($5,900)- Melky Cabrera is probably the most un-sexy DFS play in the world, which is reflected with his price tag, but if he makes his way into the lineup again today he provides cheap exposure to the top offense of the night. Cleveland finds itself at the forefront of the DFS industry tonight against Lucas Giolito, who has been arguably the worst pitcher in the MLB this season. He owns a 6.35 SIERA in 2018 with a 14% walk rate…more walks than strikeouts! Cabrera collected two hits and batted in three runs in yesterday’s game, and I will have to consider him if he’s in the lineup at this price.
