MLB Punt Plays Friday June 8

Welcome to my daily MLB article for FantasyDraft’s LockerRoom! Here you will find a breakdown for my favorite low budget MLB players for the day’s (or night’s) main slate. Each article will focus on my favorite low salary starting pitcher and my three favorite low salary batters. Although the title of the article is MLB Punt Plays, like the PGA Punt Plays written by another analyst of our DFS Karma team, they aren’t your traditional “punts.” I truly feel that each player I include in this article moving forward has a very solid chance to score you some points. To ensure my players are always light on salary, my pitcher will have a cap of $13,000 and each batter will be capped at $7,000 in salary.

P: Eric Lauer – $11,100

Lauer has struggled quite a bit this season, posting a 2-3 record with a 6.82 ERA and a 1.98 WHIP through eight games. He has also struggled with a 1.8 HR/9, although he has posted a solid 8.4 K/9. Lauer has essentially struggled against everyone this season, but he has been slightly better against left-handed batters. He gets a great matchup against the Miami Marlins, who rank second on the slate in strikeouts per at-bat and last in team wOBA. Lauer has also posted 17.05 and 20.7 fantasy points in two of his last three games, suggesting he has more upside than his price tag gives him credit for.

IF: Luis Valbuena – $6,300

Valbuena has been playing at a high level over his last 10 games, posting a .308 average with a .615 slugging percentage and a 1.015 OPS over that span. He has also recorded 50% hard-hit and 50% fly ball rates over the last 15 days. Furthermore, Valbuena features a 97 mph exit velocity over that span. He owns 0.054 wOBA and 0.08 ISO differentials against right-handed pitching, as well. He’s expected to hit in the middle of the Angels lineup, and Valbuena is a cheap option for a potential home run tonight.

OF: Jesse Winker – $6,000

Winker has quietly been heating up over his last 10 games, recording a .323 average with a .548 slugging percentage and a .996 OPS in those games. He also has three extra-base hits (two home runs) and four RBIs over that span. Furthermore, Winker is hitting nearly .300 with significantly more power in Cincinnati this season. He features 0.105 wOBA and 0.055 ISO differentials against right-handed pitching, and he gets a good matchup against Luke Weaver tonight. Winker is hitting sixth in the Reds lineup, and he should see plenty of RBI opportunities tonight. He’s a solid salary relief option in all leagues.

UTIL: Albert Pujols – $6,900

Pujols is dealing with an injury, but he expected to rejoin the Angels lineup tonight. He is not necessarily a safe option, but he comes with tremendous upside for his price tag. He has also recorded 45% hard-hit and 43% fly ball rates over the last 15 days. Over that same span, he has posted a 94 mph exit velocity. Pujols has been a better option against right-handed pitching, featuring 0.037 wOBA and 0.088 ISO differentials against righties. He’s expected to hit clean up in the LA offense, making him a solid salary relief tournament option tonight.
