MLB Punt Plays: June 6th

Welcome to the daily MLB Punt Plays for FantasyDraft’s LockerRoom! Here you will find a breakdown of my favorite low budget MLB players for tonight’s 4-game main slate.

Each article will focus on my favorite low-salary starting pitcher and my three favorite low salary batters. Although the title of this article is Punt Plays, like the PGA Punt Plays article written by another member of our DFS Karma team, they aren’t your traditional “punts”. To ensure my players are always light in salary, my pitcher will have a cap of $13,000 and each batter be capped at $7,000.

P: Sonny Gray ($13,800)- Sonny Gray has been incredibly underwhelming for the Yankees this season, but the time has come to roster him once again! Over the last few starts, Gray has ramped up his slider usage and he’s throwing it almost 30% of the time over his last 10 IP compared to 17% for the season. This is good news for this matchup, as the Blue Jays rank 6th to last in the MLB against sliders this season and their lineup is just not the same without Josh Donaldson. Gray has also pitched much better on the road this season compared to at home, and this game will take place in the Rogers Centre. It’s finally time to take advantage of his price drop and I’m on the Gray train tonight.

INF: Justin Bour ($6,400)- I think this could be a huge leverage play because I anticipate Jack Flaherty to draw decent ownership on a limited pitching slate against the lowly Marlins. While the Marlins are bad, Bour has been his normal self posting a .258 ISO against righties this season. He owns a 40% hard contact rate as well, and Flaherty has struggled with hard hits at times. I think Flaherty is good, but the one guy that can beat him in this lineup is Bour and he will be un-owned again tonight.

OF: Matt Joyce ($6,500)- This is going to be one of the premier games to attack tonight with a slate-high 10.5 O/U. Bartolo Colon has been his typical self this season, striking out 16.5% of batters while walking just 3% and allowing 43% hard hits. He has a pretty average ground ball rate, and Joyce’s numbers vs RHP don’t look amazing this season, but he does own a 45% fly ball rate. He should be able to get the ball up in the air against Colon and he will be at the top of one of the elite offensive spots of the night.

UTIL: Joey Gallo ($7,300)- As always, Joey Gallo possesses other-worldly power coupled with a massive strikeout tendency. Despite the K potential, the power is too great not to consider him at this price and the upside is evident. Gallo homered last night (shocking), and he is in another good matchup tonight at home against Daniel Mengden. Gallo owns a .271 ISO and a .343 wOBA against right-handed pitching this season along with a 50% fly ball rate. Mengden is allowing 42% fly balls to left-handed batters this season which could be bad news against Gallo and co.
