MLB Punt Plays: May 23rd

P: Chris Archer ($13,000)- Chris Archer has had a rough 2018, but this price is getting to the point where I’m willing to take chances with him in DFS. His strikeout rate is down to 22% this season, but his swing and miss stuff is still very much there with a 13.4 SwStr%. He also owns a 5.01 ERA compared to a 3.95 SIERA so he is due for some positive regression in that department. He has a tough matchup with the Red Sox, but that is very much baked into his price and he has the luxury of pitching at home in pitcher-friendly  Tropicana Field. It hasn’t been quite the same this season, but Archer has perennially dominated at home throughout his career with over 30% strikeouts there each of the last three seasons.

INF: Mark Canha ($6,600)- I think Marco Gonzales can be a good pitcher in the MLB, but that won’t stop be from attacking him with right-handed batters right now, which the A’s have quite a few of. Many don’t realize, but Canha has quietly crushed left-handed pitching in 2018 posting a .390 ISO and a .457 wOBA agains southpaws this season. He also has been seeing the ball well as of late with 38% hard hits and 57% fly balls over his last 14 days! He has power upside and should fly under the radar based on name alone.

OF: Brandon Nimmo ($6,400)- Nimmo has been a regular in this write-up this season given that the Mets continue to put him at the top of the order against right-handed pitching. Dan Straily has been one of the worst overall pitchers in the MLB this season and owns a 6.61 xFIP with just 14% strikeouts against left-handed batters thus far. Nimmo surprisingly has great on-base ability with a .455 OBP and a .420 wOBA against righties this season. He profiles as a strong play in all formats given his price and knack for getting on base should be be at the top of the Mets order again tonight.

UTIL: Jesse Winker ($5,400)- Much like Nimmo, Winker has found himself at the top of the Reds order routinely against right-handed pitching this season…and the matchup couldn’t be better against Chad Kuhl. Kuhl has the ability to be a good pitcher, but he has yet to figure out left-handed batters. This season, Kuhl owns a 4.56 xFIP, 40% hard hits and 44% fly balls against lefties compared to a 3.82 xFIP, 33% hard hits and 32% fly balls to righties. If he is in the lineup, Winker is a great value play in all formats.
