MLB Punt Plays: May 16th

P: Caleb Smith ($12,900)- Caleb Smith probably won’t continue to put up these insane strikeout numbers we are seeing (32% strikeout rate), but he is still so cheap that I’m comfortable with taking the risks. Strikeouts are king in daily fantasy, and at his price we don’t even need a huge strikeout game which weirdly we can get from him. The Dodgers don’t strike out a lot against lefties as a team, but the entire team is absolutely lost at the plate right now. The return of Justin Turner will certainly help them, but Wei-Yin Chen navigated them with ease last nigh and I think Smith is a good deal better. There’s also juice on the under in this game with the total dropping down to 7.

INF: Ben Zobrist ($6,700)- I fully expect the Braves and Cubs game to be the premier spot for bats tonight, so any way that I can get cheap exposure is good by me. Zobrist should be near the top of the Cubs line against Brandon McCarthy, and he has hit righties well this season. Zobi owns a .353 wOBA with just 13% strikeouts against righties this season and I’ll take him in all formats if he’s in the lineup. You can sub in Albert Almora here, should he be leading off.

OF: Josh Reddick ($6,300)- Garrett Richards isn’t normally someone we look to target in DFS given his 29% strikeout rate and 60% ground ball rate, but on a five game slate there are limited options and we are going to have to get weird in tournaments. Reddick’s game can neutralize some of Richards’ ability, as he struck out just 12% of the time against right-handed pitching last season and his 43% fly balls suggests he will be able to get the ball up in the air. He doesn’t have huge power upside, but he has hit righties well in his career and is probably a bit too cheap.

UTIL: Ender Inciarte ($7,200)- Ender had a rough start to the season, but has picked it up recently with a 43% fly ball rate and 42% hard contact over the last 14 days. This Cubs/Braves game is going to be one of the better spots for offensive outputs with a 9.5 O/U in Vegas. Tyler Chatwood hasn’t thrown very well this season and sports an egregious 19% walk rate thus far in 2018. Despite the slow start, Inciarte still has hit righties much better than lefties this season and he is only striking out 12% of the time against them.
