PGA Punt Plays: Arnold Palmer Invitational

Welcome back to my newest edition here in FantasyDraft’s Locker Room! If you haven’t played a PGA contest on FantasyDraft yet, I’ll fill you in. You can roster 7 golfers. Only the top 6 scores are added to your overall score, thus the lowest score of the 7 golfers in your lineup is dropped and does not count against you at all. It doesn’t matter if it was your most expensive golfer that bit the dust and missed the cut (Spieth earlier this year), or if it was a minimum salary punt play that performed like minimum price players typically do. The salaries for PGA on FantasyDraft are also rather tight so you usually must have a relatively cheap or min. priced player to help roster one or two “favorites to win”.

With that said, the purpose of this weekly PGA article is to enlighten you to the best PGA Punt Plays for the week. The overall goal here is to find the cheap golfer that can make the cut and aide your roster in case one of your “Top 6” falter or miss the cut altogether. If you roster one of these suggested players and they are the lowest score in your lineup, it usually means your “Top 6” performed adequately.

Last Week Recap: Well looky there. I couldn’t “technically” write up good ole Rory because of his over $12K salary (according to the limits I set for myself. I still mentioned to play him and he goes out and gets FIFTH place!!! For the sub $12K golfers I did write up, I was hot and got 4 out of 5 punts to make the cut. Cink and Campbell both finished -1 for a 31st place finish. Cejka was right behind at E in 40th and Donald sucked hardcore after making the cut and finished 64th with a +4.

2018 Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill (my backyard)

This course is sunny Orlando, FL (kidding, it’s 40 degrees right now as I type this). It’s a Par 72 with Bermuda greens and a length of 7419 yards.

Sean O’Hair – $11,900

Sean is 50th in SG: P, 56th in SG: SG, and 29th in SG: OTT. Not amazing. Not the worst (see Matt Every). Before missing the cut here last year he was a perfect 4/4 since 2013 with a solid 10th finish in 2014 being his best. That is it. That is all you will get for this man. MOVING ON.

Hudson Swafford – $11,800

Swafford has made the cut here in each of the last 3 years with an 11th place finish in 2015 and a 10th here last year, the highest finish in 2017 of all 5 punts. His numbers aren’t too shabby either. Recent form has him ranking in the top 37 in SG: TOT, SG: T2G, SG: BS, SG: OTT, and SG: APP. His best being an amazing 9th overall in SG: APP.

Billy Horschel – $11,600

I refer to him as Billy Horse…crap because almost every time I have rostered him he has sucked hardcore. I’m glad he has sucked his way to a sub $12K salary so I can put him here just to taunt him. Kidding. He is here because he has great numbers and the best recent form than any of the other 4 I’m including here. He ranks in the top 27 overall in SG: TOT, SG: BS, SG: OTT, SG: P. His best being 13th in SG: OTT. Course history wise he is a perfect 5 for 5 in the last 5 years here with a very impressive 13th finish here last year. So yeah, he is my favorite punt for this week.

Matt Every – $11,300

There is absolutely no reason from a recent form standpoint you should roster Every. He is a mess as of late and clocks in at the bottom of the barrel in almost all categories (aside from a 29th ranking in SG: ARG). Then why is he here you ask? Well, this chump took down this entire event in BACK TO BACK YEARS!!! He finished 1st here in 2014 and 2015. Going for a 3-peat, he missed the cut completely in 2016 and finished a lowly 62nd here last year. So yeah, 100% course history play.

David Lingmerth – $11,000

Lingmerth is also someone I hate in reference to recent form. He is also someone who is here in this article due to course history. He is a 5/5 on making the cut since 2013. Sure, he only has one finish above 50th place in the last 5 years (15th in 2015), but at least he is consistent? He is “decent” at putting on Bermuda greens and clocks in at 31st in SG: P because of it. He is the least favorite of my 5 punt plays this week, which means he will get a top 10 finish in spite of me.
