Top Picks & Targets for NFL Week 17

In this article, I will be breaking down some of my top NFL plays on FantasyDraft position by position. I will be giving my top-ranked player at each position regardless and the reasons why I like them. I will also give you a FLEX player and this player will be my favorite player of the week at either of the skill positions minus quarterback. Now you may not be able to fit all five of these players in your lineup due to salary constrictions as while I am taking salary into account when making these plays I am not building an actual roster. This goal is with this article along with the value plays article that I will be writing later on in the week is meant to be a base to help you construct your winning lineups.

With week 17 being the way it is we will only have one FantasyDraft article this week. Instead of our top plays and value play articles, we will be combining them. In this article, we are still going to give you a play at each position but instead of only giving you high priced guys we will also be mixing in some value plays.

Cam Newton-$12,500-CAR

I  am spending up for an elite quarterback that has something to play for this week as there are quite a few of them. My favorite of that group of quarterbacks is Newton as I love what he brings you with his running ability. This season Newton is averaging 8.5 carries and 46.33 rushing yards while having six rushing touchdowns. All three of those are tops in the NFL for quarterbacks and numbers that rival a lot of running backs in the league. Add that rushing ability with Newton’s 208 passing yards and over a score, a game and you have a player with a high floor and a ton of upside as Newton has proved week in and week out. In his past 12 games, Newton has produced at least 15 fantasy points ten times and has produced 20 or more fantasy points in seven of those games. One of those 20 fantasy point games was against the Falcons. With the Falcons allowing the third-most rushing yards to the quarterback position, I am expecting another big game from Newton this week.

Running Back

Derrick Henry-$9,200-TEN

I know that we have thought several different times that DeMarco Murray would miss a game due to injury only for him to play but this is injury is different. Murray has an MCL tear and I just don’t see how Murray can play through the injury or why the Titans would even want to have him try. If Murray is indeed out I don’t see how you don’t play Henry who would be in line for a ton of touches. Henry not only would be in line for a ton of touches but he is talented and has shown that talent plenty in his short career especially when given the touches. Henry has gotten 14 or more touches seven times in his career. In those games, Henry is averaging 70 total yards and 13.56 fantasy points. One of those games was against the Jaguars this season and with the Jaguars likely resting their players in a game that is meaningless to them I am expecting a similar performance from Henry.

Wide Receiver

DeAndre Hopkins-$16,500-HOU

Hopkins has been money all season long with at least four catches for 50 yards or a touchdown in every game this season. Hopkins has produced double-digit fantasy points in every game but one and in that game, he had 9.9 fantasy points. We should expect more of the same from Hopkins this week as the Colts are a positive match-up for him. This season the Colts rank in the bottom third in fantasy points allowed and DVOA to opposing teams top wideouts. With all the value on this slate, there is no reason to fade Hopkins this week.

Tight End

Antonio Gates-$7,200-LAC

Old Man Gates came up huge for the Chargers last week in place of Hunter Henry. In that game against the Jets, Gates saw eight targets and turned those targets into six catches for 81 yards and a score on his way to over 20 fantasy points. With Henry on injured reserve and in an elite match-up against a Raiders team that has allowed the fifth most fantasy points to tight ends this season you can fully expect another big game from Gates as the Chargers look to sneak into the playoffs.

Branden Oliver-$7,800-LAC

If you look at Oliver’s numbers this season there is no reason to believe he should be in your lineups. On the season Oliver is averaging a measly 2.5 yards per carry on 28 attempts and 2 fantasy points. While those are awful stats I have a great feeling about Oliver this week as he should be the feature back for the Chargers with Melvin Gordon likely out and Austin Ekeler relegated to only special team duties with a cast on his hand. Oliver should see 20 plus touches as the feature back as the Chargers are huge home favorites against a Raiders team that is middle of the pack in stopping the run. This may be a total gut call but I like Oliver to have double-digit fantasy points this week which would make him one of the better points per dollar plays on this slate.

Good luck with NFL this week!
