PGA Core Plays: The Northern Trust

The capitalization of THE NORTHERN TRUST is not by mistake.  Apparently it is necessary to put an exclamation on the name of the tournament.  THE NORTHERN TRUST brings us to Glen Oaks Club in Old Westbury, New York.  Glen Oaks comes in at a Par 70 at 7,350 yards.  Word on the street is that this is the “Augusta of the North.”  The fairways are forgiving and the bunkers are strategically placed to cause trouble.  This week will put an emphasis on the ball strikers.  The greens are said to be quick with the conditions looking to be dry this week.  With a new course this year, there is an edge to be gained for those that put in the work.  With only 2 par 5’s on the course, it is important to have your players have success on the Par 4’s.

With only 120 or so players in the field, there will be less players that miss the cut.  With the 6/6 likely higher depending on who misses the cut, it is important to have your core plays see the weekend.

Previous Winners

Since there is no course history at Glen Oaks, there is nothing to look at for previous winners or who has gained strokes here in the past.

The winds are low and not a drop of rain in the forecast for the weekend.  This means that the greens will likely be firm and fast putting an emphasis on GIR% and Putting.

Key Statistics

These are the percentage weights I will be applying to my custom model over at

  • SG: T2G (30%)
  • GIR% (20%)
  • Par 4 Scoring (20%)
  • Birdies or Better % (10%)
  • Scrambling (10%)
  • SG: Putting (10%)

Core Cash Plays

*Stats are from  from our friend “The Moose.”

Francesco Molinari ($14,800)

They just never want to price up FRANCESCOOOOOOO Molinari. We will play him as long as his price stays down.  His putting can be tilting at times but his ballstriking should help limit blowup holes.  In his last 24 rounds, Molinari ranks 2nd in Par 4 Scoring, 3rd in GIR%, 7th in BoB%, and 9th in SG:T2G.  I will be using Molinari in both formats.

Paul Casey ($15,900)

I have been using Casey in every tournament this year so why stop now.  Casey ranks 1st in GIR%, 3rd in Par 4 Scoring, and 19th in SG:T2G.  I will be using Casey in both formats.

Charley Hoffman ($14,400)

Although Hoffman came back to life at the PGA, he remains a solid play again this week at this price.  Hoffman ranks 5th in Par 4 Scoring, 6th in SG: Putting, 13th in BoB% and 15th in SG: T2G.

Tony Finau ($14,300)

A ball strikers course with Tony Finau priced near the bottom of the field.  SIGN ME UP!  Finau ranks 5th in SG: T2G, 10th in BoB%, and 33rd in GIR%.  For a player priced this low, those are some tempting stats.

Also Consider: Hideki Matsuyama, Matt Kuchar, Brooks Koepka

GPP Pivots

Kevin Chappell ($14,500)

This week for GPP plays I am sorting my golf stats on purely on Par 70’s that play over 7,300 yards and taking a peek at putting. Chappy ranks top 10 in SG: T2G, OTT and Approach in his last 36 rounds. And his putting & around the green stats rank top 40 in the field as well. He may get talked up as the week goes on, that is for you to decide on where ownership lies.

Chad Campbell ($12,300)

I always go to Chad Campbell for salary relief and there is no reason to shy away this week. In his last 5 events he has 3 top 20’s and made the cut in each of those 5 showings. At his price you are looking for him to make the cut and get a top 25 finish, and I like where his ownership will fall.

Steve Stricker ($12,200)

You are starting to see a trend here, I am targeting some older guys that are not bombers off the tee. Here we have another case and point, in his last 36 rounds he ranks 29th T2G, 3rd Around the Green and 35th Putting. Stricker has not missed a cut since the Masters and he will not be a target in this field. Remember we are looking for some guys that are going under the radar this week.
