The Target Line: Northern Trust

Welcome back to another edition of “The Target Line.”  The Fed Ex Cup is upon us and we start it off with the Northern Trust in Westbury, N.Y.  Glen Oaks Club will be playing host to a PGA event for the first time.  This event was formerly “The Barclays” and was played on rotational courses, so any course history this week is out the window.

Glen Oaks Club will play a par 70 at approximately 7,350 yards.  The course has been described as being in immaculate condition; similar to the pristine grounds of Augusta National.  I expect this to be a difficult test with greens that play firm and fast, penal rough and many sharp-edged bunkers surrounding the greens and landing areas.  It should be a great tournament to watch with all of the PGA’s best in action.  Let’s take a look at the key stats for this week (stats are 10 tournament rolling stats; field ranking):

  • Strokes Gained: Tee to Green (SG:T2G)
  • Strokes Gained: Off the Tee (SG:OTT)
  • Strokes Gained: Putting (SG:P)
  • Stokes Gained: Approach (SG:App)
  • Par 4 Scoring (P4score)
  • Proximity 175-200 (Prox:175-200)
  • Scrambling% (Scrmb%)

We do not have any course history to go off of this week, so we will be focusing on recent form and any performances in majors.  It is always good to see how these guys preform with the best of the best.  Here are some of my targets this week:

Brooks Koepka ($16,600)

Brooks has been on an absolute heater!  His last four finishes are: T-13 (PGA Champ); T-17 (WGC-Bridgestone); T-6 (The Open Champ); and a win at the U.S Open.  He ranks 5th in (SG:T2G); 1st (SG:OTT); 6th (SG:P); 7th (SG:App); 54th (Par4:score); 37th (Prox:175-200); and 48th (Scramb%) in this field.  He has risen to the occasion again and again in strong field events, so count me in!

Paul Casey ($15,900)

Paul has recent finishes of T13 (PGA Champ); T5 (WGC-Bridgestone); T11 (The Open Champ); and T5 (Travelers).  He also finished 26th at the U.S Open and 6th at The Masters.  Basically, he is getting it done!  His rolling stat field ranks are 2nd (SG:T2G); 22nd (SG:OTT); 70th (SG:P); 1st (SG:App); 21st (Par4:Score); 13th (Prox:175-200); and 27th (Scramb%).  I look for Paul to contend on Sunday; especially if the putter gets hot.

Tony Finau ($14,300)

Finau keeps turning in quality finishes with a T44 (PGA Champ); T5 (RBC Canadian); T27 (The Open Champ); and a T7 (Greenbrier Classic).  He ranks 13th (SG:T2G); 5th (SG:OTT); 29th (SG:P); 58th (SG:App); 44th (Par4:Score); 56th (Prox:175-200); and 10th (Scramb%) in this field.

Steve Stricker ($12,200)

Stricker has not missed a cut since March!  He has been turning in solid performances in the majors too with a T54 (PGA Champ); T37 (The Open Champ); T16’s in both the (U.S Open); and (The Masters).  He has some solid stat ranks with 37th (SG:T2G); 108th (SG:OTT); 9th (SG:P); 30th (SG:App); 54th (Par4:Score); 83rd (Prox:175-200); and 37th (Scramb%).  I think he is an excellent value play this week.

Others to Consider

Matt Kuchar ($15,800)

The definition of consistency!  Has the upside and is overdue for a win.  7th (SG:P); 9th (Scramb%); and 17th (Par4:Score).

Jamie Lovemark ($13,100)

Recent form of T33 (PGA Champ); T22 (The Open Champ); T25 (John Deere Classic); and T3 (Greenbrier Classic).

Louis Oosthuizen ($15,500)

King Louis capped off the career 2nd place grand slam at the PGA Championship.  He always seems to sneak up the leaderboard on the weekend.  He is solid on Approach (12th) and Putting (17th) in this field.
