Rounding the Bases: August 22

`Welcome to Rounding the Bases for Tuesday, August 22nd, 2017. In this article, I will list my four top plays of the day, regardless of pricing. I know that typically content is given in tiered formats to give you options at different levels, and I will try my best, but I’m not going to force myself into that model.

To keep with the theme of baseball, I’ll list four players, from first to home, in increasing order of interest for me tonight. These guys may or may not be usable in all formats. I have become more of a tournament player over the last year, so that is where my mentality is normally at.

All things considered, it was a ho-hum night on Friday night. We saw Manny Pina do nothing, while Yuli Gurriel, Nomar Mazara and Cody Bellinger only had decent games. Better luck next time, I guess. Home Runs called this season: 16 in 30 articles. With that said, here are my favorites today.

Jose Ramirez – CLE – $9,300

SINGLE: These picks are not going to be cheap. I am a firm believer that you can find pitching cheaper (Gray/Lynn/Ubaldo) and spend on your bats.

Ramirez has a nice matchup against Doug Fister, who had an extra day of rest in between starts. That should mean nothing. On the year, he is allowing a .400 wOBA, 32.4% fly ball rate, 17.4% HR/FB ratio and 41.9% hard contact against lefties.

Ramirez and the Indians should be able to take advantage of those numbers. He is a great source for fantasy production because he can do it in so many ways. With so many options tonight, he could go under-looked.

Joey Votto – CIN – $9,600

DOUBLE: Not only is Votto one of the better hitters in all of baseball, but he gets to play in a great park for hitters.

On top of that, he gets to go up against John Lackey, who just has not been good against left-handed batters at all this year. Allowing a laughable .380 wOBA, 37.6% fly ball rate, 21.6% HR/FB ratio and 33% hard contact, it is likely that we see Lester give up some damage tonight.

Yes, he is expensive, but there is little doubt that we should see Votto be in a position to provide a very nice score tonight.

Adrian Beltre – TEX – $9,600

TRIPLE: Beltre really is having a solid year, and there is no way I go tonight without at least some exposure to him. While the stadium might not be ideal, the pitching matchup is.

Ricky Nolasco is a disaster when it comes to throwing to right-handed bats, and his .405 wOBA, 35.3% fly ball rate, 27.4% HR/FB ratio and 42.6% hard contact are evidence of that.

It is highly recommended to get some exposure to the Rangers and their righties tonight, but Beltre is my favorite of the bunch.

Mike Trout – LAA – $10,800

LONG BALL: Look, I do my best to keep the guys like Mike Trout out of my breakdowns because he is basically a good play every night. I guess if he manages to make the list today, it must be for something special.

He gets a very good matchup against Tyson Ross. I think he is a very bad pitcher. The stats back it up. The .396 wOBA, 37.5% fly ball rate, 13% HR/FB ratio and 33% hard contact against righties are not good.

I am expecting a really big game out of Trout tonight, and he is by far my favorite play.
