The Target Line: Wyndham Championship

Welcome back to another edition of “The Target Line.”  This week we head right down the road to Greensboro, N.C for the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club.  The Donald Ross designed course measures in at 7,127 yards and will play a par 70.  We will be on Bermuda again this week, playing on some tricky greens that are smaller, undulating and slope back-to-front.  Players may find themselves chipping up from the many collection areas surrounding them.  Ross designed courses typically feature holes that reward accuracy for creating the best angles on approach.  Let’s take a look at some of the key stats and players I am targeting this week!

KEY STATS (Rankings are in the Wyndham field; five tournament rolling stats)

  • Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green (SG:T2G)
  • Strokes Gained: Approach (SG:App)
  • Strokes Gained: Putting (SG:Putt)
  • Par 4 Scoring (Par4:Scor)
  • Greens in Regulation% (GIR%)
  • Scrambling%
  • Driving Accuracy% (DA%)

As always, we will take a look at recent form and tournament history.  On an extra note:  Players will be trying to make the cut for the FedEx Cup this week, so check the standings.  Some players on the fringe of making it may have a little extra motivation.  Here are some of the golfers I am targeting this week.

CHAD CAMPBELL ($14,900):

Chad has been in great recent form with finishes of 32nd, 18th, 12th, and 9th.  Over his last five tournaments his ranks in this field are:  21st (SG:T2G); 15th (SG:App); 31st (SG:Putt); 9th (Par4:Scor); 15th (GIR%); 44th (Scrambling%) and 25th (DA%).  His course history is not stellar, but the stats and form are enough for me.

CHEZ REAVIE ($14,900):

Chez has been playing some great golf this year.  He has made his last four cuts with two of those being top 25 finishes.  His last five tournament rolling stats are:  7th (SG:T2G); 11th (SG:App); 72nd (SG:Putt); 85th (Par4:Scor); 49th (GIR%); 42nd (Scrambling%) and 9th (DA%).  He has missed his last three cuts at the Wyndham, which is a concern, but I am relying on his much improved form this year.

BEN MARTIN ($15,100):

Martin fits a lot of the rolling stat ranks I am looking for this week.  In this field he is 16th (SG:T2G); 14th (SG:App); 63rd (SG:Putt); 22nd (Par4:Scor); 14th (GIR%); 2nd (Scrambling%) and 23rd in (DA%).  Aside from a missed cut at the RBC Canadian, he has shown good form with finishes of 14th, 6th, 39th, 37th, and took 5th at the Quicken Loans National.  He did miss the cut here last year, but finished 10th in 2015.  I think he makes for a solid play.

The last time Kevin played this tournament was in 2012 where he finished 37th.  In his other three starts, he has finishes of 18th, 44th and 6th.  His stats seem to align well for the course where his five tournament rolling stats rank 10th (SG:T2G); 5th (SG:App); 99th (SG:Putt); 55th (Par4:Scor); 10th (GIR%); 38th (Scrambling%) and 4th in (DA%).  The rest of his game has been in great form, so if he gets the putter going, he could be in the mix on Sunday.

Other Golfers to Consider:

Ryan Moore ($16,200):

Has a Top 10 and a Win here.  Seems to be rolling back into form after some time off with a shoulder injury (13th at the PGA Championship and 28th at the Bridgestone).  Loves playing this course, which is always good to hear!

Seamus Power ($14,100):

4th in (Par4:Scor), 11th (SG:Putt) and 20th in (Scrambling%) for his rolling stats have me interested.  If he can keep improving on his driving accuracy, he has all the rest of the tools needed to contend.
